Q I have a two year-old refrigeration system that uses Freon. With the new environmental standards coming into effect, how long will I be able to get Freon to charge my system? And will the new coolant work in old systems, or will I need an adapter? A Freon-12 will be in production until December 31, 1995. After that date only recycled Freon-12 will be available. All refrigeration service companies are required by law to reclaim and recycle all refrigerants except 134a so there should be an adequate supply on hand for some time. 134a will work only with synthetic oils and not the mineral oils used with Freon-12. Unfortunately, the synthetic oils attack the rubber hoses and seals in the compressor. With these conditions imposed it will be necessary to do the following: 1. Flush mineral oil out of the refrigeration components to less than 4% contamination of the mineral oil to synthetic oil. 2. Change all rubber hoses and seals to 134a compatible parts. At present, there are no factory recommended retro-fit procedures. Randy
